As a first time business owner, you are bound to make a ton of mistakes without the proper guidance, advice, and resources.

As I am the first in my immediate family to start a business, Iโ€™ve gained a lot of experience and have learned a few lessons along the way.

Investing in the proper legal, financial, and Human Resources Management services, tools, and applications are vital to the health and existence of your business.

Professionally, I would like to share two mistakes Iโ€™ve made which created stress, delay, and financial penalty!

Intuitโ€™s QuickBooks Self Employed service was my first mistake.

I opened this account based on the FB and twitter reviews which seemed fair for a first time business owner. I applied and immediately received a decision of approval. Once I received my debit card, I purchased business related items for my One of Sevynโ€™s Members care packages from Amazon. Within two hours of this purchase, I received an email stating my account had been closed.

Confused? Mad confused. Has someone stolen my information that fast? Did I violate the terms of service? Was my application incorrect? Well of course, receiving this communication, I anxiously called to rectify the matter.

This is where all the red flags come in!

  1. They outsource their customer support and a lot of them are working from home. From the dogs barking loudly over the representative, the extreme language barrier, rude tones, poor mannerism, lack of training and professionalism; this was the poorest customer service I ever experienced to date! I was disrespected, hung up on, and given the run around for almost two months between QuickBooks and GreenDot.
  2. There are no real policies or procedures in place for them to provide quality customer care. They do not care about your matter, only your money.
  3. There was a remaining balance on my card that they did not know how I would receive back at first. I was informed I was considered fraudulent and for that reason they did not (per their policies) have to refund my money. Even after volunteering to submit whatever legal documentation to verify my identity; they had no type of process. They said I was fraudulent because I purchased from Amazon and they had the right to take my money. Period. I was beyond frustrated for weeks.
  4. From a quality assurance perspective, I know they were never supposed to even say I was fraudulent because that created space for major escalations; which I definitely was. I said all the right trigger words to get quality assurance but I don’t even think they invest in QA from the piss poor service I received.
  5. After two months, I randomly swiped my card and the balance was accessible. No other communication between us has been made.

0/10 rating! Definitely would not recommend!

LegalZoom did not perform but I only assumed! I did not double check behind them!

LegalZoom was a service provider I wholeheartedly believed in until I paid for services which were never performed, leading to state penalty fees and a headache I didnโ€™t need. I invested about $600 in LegalZoom services to have a Registered Agent and my Annual Reports submitted. Of course, I was happy to invest because I did not want to deal with the processes of working with the state or government.

I submitted my investments way before the deadline for the report they never filed! I received an email about my order not being processed and a $100 fee from the state because of my failure to comply. How could this be when I paid LegalZoom to do it? I called with the quickness and to my surprise, they did not do shit!

A refund was requested and processed. It was then spent with the state handling the matters they failed to! The Illinois state representative was very helpful and walked me through how to file the report myself for 66% less than what I paid to LegalZoom. Sounds scammy to me! Took my money and did not perform the work. Only communicated when I needed to give more money!!! Red flag!

Now with LegalZoom, they did provide quality and effective customer service. The refunds I requested were all processed and the representative cared about my concern; acknowledging their lack of action. Invest with LegalZoom at caution!

5/10 rating! I would not recommend!

From my business mistakes, I encourage you to:

  • Read online reviews on multiple social media platforms to gauge real life experiences. Google also is a great space to see how other business owners feel about the service. Look for real human reviews and not reviews that seem very sketchy.
  • Call and ask any and all questions about their services and policies before you invest!
  • Print or screen shot receipts. Be sure to track these interactions on your calendar and planner whenever you call in or request/submit information.
  • Work directly with your state as much as possible because the fees are way less if you file and report independently.
  • Invest in a file binder or cabinet to store all pertinent information and compliance notices.
  • Know or have immediate access to your social security number or EIN to avoid headaches and delays in the resolution process.
  • Familiarize yourself with your business or brand compliance and legal guidelines by visiting your state, local, and federal websites for more information.
  • Do not be afraid to ask for a refund, write a poor review, or request higher management when your issue is not being handled with care.

I hope this helps save someone time, money, and energy from navigating the hardships I have. From my naive experiences, Iโ€™ve newfound wisdom to share as I grow through self employment. Year two of business is easier to navigate the Moore I educate myself and hold myself accountable.
